Behind the Scenes at Technoset: Meet Sam – from apprentice to Fixed Head Setter

At Technoset, investing in people is just as important as investing in technology. Many of our experienced engineers began their careers as apprentices, developing their skills through hands-on training, mentoring and real manufacturing experience. One of those success stories is Sam.

Joining Technoset as an apprentice, Sam quickly demonstrated the attention to detail, commitment and technical ability needed to thrive in precision engineering. Over the years, he has progressed into the role of Fixed Head Setter, becoming one of the key members of our machining team and supporting the production of high-precision components for customers across a wide range of industries.

Sam’s journey reflects what makes an engineering apprenticeship so valuable. By learning directly on advanced CNC machinery, gaining experience alongside skilled engineers and continually developing his knowledge, he has built a successful career within the business.

If you are interested in learning more about careers at Technoset, explore our career opportunities and discover how we support the next generation of engineers.

In the latest episode of our Behind the Scenes at Technoset series, Sam takes us through one of the most critical stages of CNC machining – setting up a fixed head machine for production.

What goes into setting a CNC fixed head machine?

Our fixed head CNC machining capabilities support customers across a wide range of industries requiring precision, repeatability and consistent quality at scale.

Producing precision-machined components starts long before the cycle start button is pressed. Every successful production run begins with a thorough and carefully planned machine setup.

In this video, Sam explains the complete process of preparing one of our Miyano BNE51 fixed head CNC lathes, highlighting why preparation, organisation and attention to detail are essential to achieving consistent quality.

You can learn more about the advanced CNC machinery and multi-axis machining technologies used throughout our production facility.

In the video, you’ll discover:

  • How job packs, manufacturing checks and inspection documentation ensure every job is fully prepared before machining begins.
  • Why checking tooling, materials, gauges and program revisions is vital before setup starts.
  • The importance of correctly setting bar feeders, spindle collets, and gripping systems to reduce vibration and improve surface finish.
  • Why tooling position, tool stick-out and program verification are carefully checked to prevent collisions on complex twin-spindle and multi-turret machines.
  • How proving out a new setup helps achieve accurate first-off parts and minimises setup scrap.
  • Why every first-off component is independently checked before production begins, ensuring quality is right first time.

Throughout the video, Sam also shares the lessons he’s learned during his career, explaining how taking the time to complete each stage properly ultimately saves time, reduces waste, and leads to consistently high-quality components.

The episode also offers a glimpse into the standards we work to every day at Technoset. Clean, organised workstations, thorough planning and a commitment to continuous improvement all play a part in delivering precision-engineered components that our customers can rely on.

Whether you’re interested in CNC machining, considering a career in engineering or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes in a modern precision engineering company, this episode provides an insight into the skill and expertise involved in every setup.

If you are looking for a precision engineering partner for your next project, our team supports customers across multiple sectors with high-quality CNC machined components, technical expertise, and scalable production solutions.

Watch the latest episode to see how careful preparation helps Technoset achieve precision, quality,  and right-first-time-production.
